Mitsumasa Anno drew wordless books you could look at for an hour and still find something new in. This one travels through Denmark, past sunny dunes and Viking ruins and colorful seaports, with Hamlet and his father's ghost turning up somewhere in the middle of it. Hans Christian Andersen is everywhere, so mermaids fall in love with princes, an emperor parades without his clothes, and Thumbelina, the Steadfast Tin Soldier and the Nightingale are all in there for a child to spot. Anno visited Andersen's birthplace many times and credited him with a turning point in his own career, which makes this an affectionate book as well as a clever one. This edition includes his notes on each scene, translated from Japanese into English for the first time.
