Mitsumasa Anno drew wordless books you could look at for an hour and still find something new in. This one wanders through Italy, past Brunelleschi's Duomo and the Ponte Vecchio and the Trevi Fountain, with the life of Christ told through the Renaissance masters who painted it, Fra Angelico and Michelangelo and Leonardo among them. Then look again and Charlie Chaplin is in the crowd, along with Sophia Loren and James Dean, which is the sort of joke Anno liked to leave for whoever was paying attention. His notes at the back explain the journey and much of what is hidden in each scene, though he is careful to leave plenty for a reader to find alone.
