Some books are shaped like the thing they are about, and this one is a tall narrow column you hold upright in your hands. Sophie Blackall follows a keeper through his whole working life at a lighthouse far out on a rock, arriving with a suitcase to replace the man before him, polishing the lens and trimming the wick, winding the clockwork that keeps the lamp turning all night, and writing every small thing down in the logbook. A wife comes out to join him. A baby is born. The fog rolls in, the icebergs drift past, and in the end the light is made automatic and the keepers go ashore for good. Blackall painted the interiors as round cutaway rooms, the way a child looks into a dollhouse, so there is a great deal to find on every page. It won her a second Caldecott Medal, and it is a quiet book about doing one necessary job well year after year, and about the life that fills in around it.
