Two chipmunks in nightcaps, tucked into separate beds under quilts, waiting out the winter underground. A little iron stove burns between them with a kettle on top, mittens and a towel are pegged up on a line to dry, and an oil lamp hangs from a root. Snow is packed against both windows. Books are open on the rug, there are baskets of acorns and dried mushrooms in the corner, and nobody is going anywhere for a while.
