There is a particular satisfaction in a pattern that refuses to hold still. This A5 note pad from Pepin Press holds sixty-four sheets of heavy ivory paper, thirty-two ruled and thirty-two blank, with one of four Op Art designs printed on the back of every sheet, sixteen sheets to each pattern. Spirals pull inward, interlocking shapes fold over themselves, and the longer you look the less certain you are about what the paper is actually doing. Sheets tear away cleanly for notes, drawings, or patterns copied out by hand to work out how the illusion is built. The paper is heavy enough to take fountain pen ink, marker, and colored pencil without bleeding through to the sheet underneath.
