Shells have been drawing careful attention from illustrators for as long as anyone has been able to hold a brush steady. This A5 note pad from Pepin Press holds sixty-four sheets of heavy ivory paper, thirty-two ruled and thirty-two blank, with one of four antique seashell studies printed on the back of every sheet, sixteen sheets to each design. There are nautilus cross sections with their chambers laid open, a spotted cowrie, and a spiral conch banded in copper and cream, all reproduced from natural history plates in the Pepin archive. Sheets tear away cleanly for a letter, a label on a specimen box, or a note left where someone will find it. The paper is heavy enough to take fountain pen ink without bleeding through to the sheet underneath.
